Easy-to-work vegetable wax, soy wax melts at a low temperature, around 50 °C. It holds fragrance well and offers a smooth surface when cooling: in practice, it is a reliable base for making your first homemade candles.
Rapeseed wax, a European alternative

Sizing the wick for your homemade candle

Professional quality Grasse fragrances cost a bit more, but the diffusion is clearer, more stable, and more faithful once the wax is melted.
Dosage: 5 to 10% of the wax weight. For 200 g of wax: 10 to 20 g of fragrance.

The 8 steps to successfully make a homemade candle
Step 1: Prepare the container for the wax
Work on a washable surface: hot wax is difficult to clean. Clean your container with a dry cloth, as even the slightest dust or grease trace prevents the wax from adhering well to the walls.
Step 2: Fix the wick to the bottom of the container
Place a drop of hot glue, or an adhesive dot, in the center of the bottom of the container. Press the metal base of the wick onto it, well centered. Then pull the wick upwards and pass it through a wooden stick laid across the container: it will stay straight during pouring.
Step 3: Melt the wax in a double boiler
Weigh the wax, about 200 g for a 180 g container: a slight margin compensates for density differences. Place it in a container over a water bath to melt. Never melt wax directly in a pot over high heat, as it can catch fire.
Watch the thermometer. Soy wax melts between 50 and 60 °C. The ideal heating temperature remains 70 to 75 °C maximum.
Step 4: Cool slightly before adding fragrance
Turn off the heat and let the wax cool down to 60 to 65 °C before adding the fragrance. If added too early, some of it evaporates with the heat.
Step 5: Add essential oils and fragrance
Weigh the fragrance precisely, between 10 and 20 g for 200 g of wax depending on the desired intensity. Then pour the fragrance or essential oils into the wax and stir gently for at least 2 minutes with a wooden stick. This step prevents the formation of scent pockets that burn poorly.
Step 6: Pour the wax into the container
Make sure the wax is at 55 to 60 °C when pouring. Hotter, the scent evaporates; cooler, it solidifies during pouring. Pour slowly, in a thin stream, into the center of the container. The wick should stay straight; adjust it with a stick if needed.
Step 7: Let cool slowly
Do not move the candle for 24 hours. Too rapid cooling or even slight vibrations can cause cracks and craters on the surface. Let it rest in a calm place at room temperature: no refrigerator, no cold windowsill.
Step 8: Trim the wick and let cure
Once the wax is completely set, trim the wick to about 5 mm above the surface. Then, let the homemade candle cure for 1 to 2 weeks before lighting it. During this time, the scent distributes more evenly throughout the wax: this is the “curing” phase, a subtle step that significantly improves the final result.
Common candle-making problems and their solutions
Tunnel effect: the candle hollows out in the center
The wick is often too thin compared to the diameter of the container. In practice, choose a larger wick size for the next homemade candle. For the current candle, let it burn for 2 to 3 hours so the wax melts all the way to the edges.
The surface of my candle has craters or cracks
The wax cooled too quickly. Therefore, it is better to pour it a bit hotter, then let it rest in a temperate, draft-free place. Once solidified, the surface can be slightly heated with a heat gun to achieve a smoother finish.
My perfume is not noticeable once lit
Several causes are possible: too low dosage, adding fragrance at too high a temperature, a fragrance poorly suited for burning, or insufficient curing time. Success depends on process consistency: incorporation temperature, precise dosage, and resting a few days before lighting.
The wick produces a lot of soot
The wick may be too thick, or the wax too heavily scented. Conversely, a more balanced formulation significantly improves burning: a slightly thinner wick and reducing fragrance dosage by 1 to 2% are often enough for the next batch.
The wax remains soft, does not solidify properly
The pouring temperature may have been too low, or the wax-to-fragrance ratio is unbalanced. The key is measurement: a well-formulated homemade candle generally does not exceed 10% fragrance relative to the wax weight.
My candle has air bubbles inside
The wax was probably poured too cold. Additionally, pouring between 55 and 60 °C, slowly and steadily in the center of the container, limits air bubbles and helps retain the fragrance in the wax mass.
Safety: essential candle-making rules
- Never leave melted wax unattended on the heat.
