Scented Candle: The Complete Guide to Choosing and Using It Properly
Celine Pugin
The scented candle has become an essential item in our interiors. Much more than just a decorative element, it transforms a room, accompanies our evening rituals, marks important moments, and instantly creates an atmosphere. But not all scented candles are equal. Between plant-based waxes and paraffin, Grasse fragrances and synthetic scents, cotton wicks and wooden wicks, the differences are significant—for burn quality, fragrance diffusion, and even the air quality in your home.
At Cap-Nature, we handcraft Swiss artisanal candles made with plant-based wax and fragrances from Grasse. In this comprehensive guide, we share everything you need to know to choose, use, and care for your scented candle properly.
What is a scented candle?
A scented candle is made up of three main elements: a wax, a wick, and a fragrance. The wax is heated, mixed with a fragrance, then poured into a container (glass, ceramic, metal…) where it solidifies around the wick. When the wick is lit, it warms the wax, which melts gradually and releases the fragrance into the air.
The art of a scented candle lies in the balance between these three elements. A quality wax melts evenly, a properly sized wick produces a stable flame, and a well-measured fragrance diffuses a pleasant scent without being overpowering.

The different types of wax for scented candles
The choice of wax is the number one criterion for the quality of a scented candle. It determines the burn time, the quality of fragrance diffusion, and the cleanliness of the flame.
Soy wax
Plant-based wax derived from soy. It burns slowly and cleanly, without producing black smoke. It diffuses scents well and melts at a low temperature, which extends the candle's lifespan.
Rapeseed wax
European plant-based wax, more local than soy (often imported from America). It offers excellent scent diffusion and a consistent burn. It is a wax favored by European and Swiss artisans.
Coconut wax
Often mixed with soy wax, it provides an even smoother burn and excellent fragrance release. The soy-coconut blend is now considered one of the highest quality on the market.
Beeswax
An ancient natural wax, it releases a slight natural honey note and burns for a very long time. It is more expensive and generally reserved for high-end candles.
Paraffin wax — to avoid
Wax derived from petroleum refining, still very common in cheap industrial candles. It is less respectful of indoor air than vegetable waxes and can produce soot. That is why we do not use it at Cap-Nature.
Palm wax — also to avoid
Although vegetable-based, its production is linked to deforestation. For ethical reasons, many artisans — including Cap-Nature — do not use it.
Natural or synthetic scented candle: what are the differences?
The term natural scented candle covers two aspects: the wax (vegetable rather than petrochemical) and the fragrance (derived from natural extracts or recognized perfumers rather than low-quality synthetic fragrances).
A natural scented candle offers several advantages:
- a cleaner burn, without soot or black smoke
- a better indoor air quality
- a more subtle and longer-lasting fragrance diffusion
- a reduced environmental impact (renewable materials)
- a reduction in the risk of allergies or irritations
At Cap-Nature, our candles are made from vegetable wax and Grasse fragrances free of CMR (without carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic substances) and are IFRA-compliant.
How to choose a scented candle: the 5 essential criteria
1. The type of wax
Favor vegetable waxes (soy, rapeseed, coconut, beeswax). Avoid paraffin and palm wax.
2. The origin of the fragrance
Grasse fragrances, IFRA-compliant and free of CMR substances, guarantee superior olfactory quality and safety for your interior.
3. The wick
Prefer natural cotton wicks without lead. Wooden wicks offer a slight crackling sound appreciated in a cozy atmosphere.
4. Burning time
A good 180 g candle should offer 30 to 50 hours of burning time. At Cap-Nature, our 180 g candles reach up to 40 hours.
5. The container
A beautiful container made of thick glass, ceramic, or metal plays both an aesthetic and practical role: it protects the flame, distributes heat evenly, and can be reused once the candle is finished.
Which scented candle for which room?

Scented candle with semi-precious stone: the Cap-Nature signature
Our signature is scented candles set with a semi-precious stone. Each stone is symbolically associated with an intention (gentleness, grounding, light…), and we have matched a fragrance that extends this intention. Once the candle is used up, the stone can be kept as a small keepsake talisman.

How to properly use a scented candle
First use: the golden rule
At the first lighting, let your candle burn long enough so that the entire surface is liquid up to the edges of the container (usually 1 to 2 hours). This prevents the formation of a "tunnel": the wax would then only burn in the center, wasting the material on the edges.
Trim the wick
Before each lighting, trim the wick to about 5 mm. A wick that is too long produces a tall flame, which creates soot and melts the wax too quickly.
Extinguish cleanly
Prefer a snuffer or gently place the lid on the candle rather than blowing it out. This prevents drowning the wick in wax and limits smoke.
Burn time in one go
Avoid letting a candle burn for more than 4 consecutive hours. After this time, the wax overheats and the flame becomes unstable.
Safety: rules to follow
- Never leave a candle burning unattended.
- Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
- Keep it away from flammable materials (curtains, books, fabrics) and drafts.
- Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
- Ventilate the room regularly.
Artisanal scented candles vs industrial: the difference
An artisanal scented candle is hand-poured in small batches, using carefully selected raw materials: vegetable wax, Grasse perfumes, natural cotton wicks. Each piece is individually inspected. In contrast, an industrial candle prioritizes cost: cheap paraffin, synthetic fragrances, mass production.
The Swiss market illustrates this well: 15,000 tons of candles are imported into Switzerland each year, mainly from Asia and Eastern Europe. Choosing a Swiss artisanal candle means supporting local expertise, local jobs, and more environmentally friendly production.

FAQ – Everything you need to know about scented candles
What is the best wax for a scented candle?
Vegetable waxes (soy, rapeseed, coconut) are considered the best. They burn cleanly, diffuse scents well, and respect indoor air quality. Avoid paraffin and palm wax.
How long does a scented candle burn?
A high-quality 180 g scented candle burns between 30 and 50 hours. Cap-Nature candles offer up to 40 hours of scented diffusion thanks to the slow-burning vegetable wax.
Is a scented candle dangerous for health?
A quality scented candle, made with vegetable wax, an IFRA-compliant fragrance, and a lead-free cotton wick, poses no risk under normal use. Low-end paraffin candles with synthetic fragrances can, however, degrade air quality. Always ventilate your room regularly.
Why does my scented candle hollow out in the middle?
This is called a “tunneling.” It happens when the candle hasn’t been burned long enough during the first lighting. To avoid it, during the first use, let the candle burn until the surface is completely liquid up to the edges.
How to know if a scented candle is of good quality?
Check: the type of wax (vegetable > paraffin), the origin of the fragrance (Grasse, IFRA compliance), the wick (lead-free cotton), the stated burn time, and the manufacturer’s transparency about the composition. A handmade candle signs its work.
Where to buy a handmade scented candle in Switzerland?

Can you relight a candle that has been extinguished?
Yes, no problem. Just check before relighting that the wick is straight, clean, and trimmed to 5 mm.
In conclusion
Choosing a scented candle is not just about choosing a scent. It’s about choosing a wax, a know-how, an intention. A beautiful scented candle burns cleanly, diffuses its fragrance subtly, and accompanies your daily moments like a discreet ritual. It’s a small object, but it truly changes the atmosphere of a room.
At Cap-Nature, we put all of this into every candle we handcraft: vegetable wax, Grasse fragrances, attention to every detail. So that the flame is not just a light… but a moment.
